If someone inserts a URL embedded in their text, like this, it appears identical to the regular text - at least for me, regardless of what browser I use or whether I'm logged in or not. Perhaps a change could be made to force links to either be underlined or changed to a different color so that they stand out?

You could just put in Text Here. Find a good color you like then put it in.

I think it's about time we made links a different color. Pure white, yellow, or hell even solid black would make them more visible than they are now, especially since they aren't underlined by default :p

Good point, especially since I changed the basic forum text to pure white now to accommodate for the translucent background. (links were white, text slightly grey before)
I applied a simple underline. I wanted to highlight links like this first, but I'm not sure if people would like that...

I've been doing this for a couple years now
and it seems to work fine. I'm a bit of a design snob so I'm not so sure about colors. The color changes for the forum that occurred during the upgrade seem a bit chaotic for instance, but like I said...
Code: Select all
TEXT

The main reason for not highlighting links in posts in phpBB2 was that it also highlighted all the links on the forum index, but as that no longer appears to be the case then a simple underline effect seems perfectly reasonable IMO.

Criticism/suggestions are most definitely welcome. I simply adapted the phpBB3's subSilver2 theme (successor of the original subSilver) to estimately use the same colours as the old forums, so some things may be lacking...
Also I'm kind of battling with the image background right now - the CSS opacity method I used to make the forums see-through caused lag for some users, which is why I'm looking for an alternative to that, for instance by using translucent PNGs for table cell backgrounds. But, of course, that change may not even be desired, so I need the Glorious People's feedback on that, especially since there's design experts among us.

AFAIK with png links are not clickable in IE6 (at least with transparency fix), but then again who the hell use it anyway . Everyone with modern browser should be able to see nice background with transparent png (without lags).

I still have lags due to the background shot. The forum has become as slow as the mainsite, i.e. lags while scrolling and loading. I say make it configurable throughout board styles (one with the background & translucency and one with the old black void).

Making it new optional style is a good idea, or maybe configurable through UCP.

Yeah. There's an optional "fancy" style you can select in your Board Settings now, with translucency and backgrounds and whatnot. You guys gotta tell me which of them I should enforce as default!

I suggest the fancy style as the default, then anyone who moans can be advised to switch down to the more basic style.
