I loved making the Titan sequence. Titans had gotten boring by 2004 for Unreal players. But here they can insta kill you and you can pierce them with a few bolts from a temporary super shock rifle. All the player has to do to win is to outlast all the Titans and dodge all the rocks. Easy enough, right? Unreal players even then were pretty adept at punking Titans, so my idea was to present a scenario where veteran players could really test that skill.

My favorite 7B map by far. I remember thinking, "Eh, I already fought a titan, I couldn't possibly have to deal with all of these." And then when the fight started, I though, "This won't be too hard." And when two titans got up, I started to panic. What a great way to make an easy enemy threatening again!

I love this map. As an abandoned temple, it was really convincing and looked absolutely fantastic. I was surprised that the titan fights were actually interesting, too. When I first played through it, I didn't know that Haute was from the books, so I really liked it when I read them and played through the map a second time.

Just watched the playthrough and now i'm confused.
I thought there was a point during the titan fight where you got to fight 3 titans at once, but that didn't happen in the playthrough....

I think that tended to happen more on Unreal difficulty. Lower difficulties kept it simple.

The Guardians are not on a time trigger but rather a kill trigger. At two points in the battle you will have two of them waking up at the same time. I believe in these instances I used a counter to bind these dual appearances together as one "sit up" event, meaning you have to kill both of them before the next Titan animates. If this is correct and the video verifies it, you cannot have more than two of them up at once. On Unreal difficulty...not as many players enjoy the campaign on that difficulty so I won't defer to feedback, but I'm fairly certain the sequence is not changed for the highest difficulty setting. It's been ten years.

I don't know if I've ever played that level on Unreal difficulty (maybe once, but I can't remember it), but I was basing my statement off of this quote from you in your Anatomy of a Boss Fight page:
Pretty soon you are hip to the routine; fire a dozen or so shots and engage the next Titan. You are doing good, but suddenly you realize that the pattern changes and the Titans start waking up two at a time! Double jeopardy! The fight from that point on is random... you never know when a second... or even maybe a third... will stand up for a single fight.

I believe I was referencing the battle from the first time player's perspective, where the situation is unlike Titan fights they have seen previously. As far as they are concerned a third could very well join the fray at any moment. But in the actual battle I am fairly certain you only ever see two at one time.

Interesting. Is there any reason you didn't just go the whole way and actually have us fighting three at once? I suppose it keeps the player guessing for the whole fight, rather than just introducing another recognisable pattern.

There's presenting a daunting experience and then there is simply asking too much of the player. I felt three at once, insta rifle or no insta rifle, might be one rock the player had to dodge too many. Maybe if the fighting environment was bigger...

Unfortunately yeah. It's too late now so the new MOTW will be moved to next Monday.
