Been recently playing through SP map packs. (UT 436, OSA 239). I get occasional weird stutter with almost every map, framerate dropping to apparently single digits; it goes away when i restart UT, until it happens again. I also have audio problems, suddenly ambient sounds can become extremely loud tearing noise (while music stays fine). Now I started getting crashes in the first map of Project Zephon, with always this same general protection fault:
History: UpdateSounds <- UGalaxyAudioSubsystem::Update <- UGameEngine::Draw <- UWindowsViewport::Repaint <- UWindowsClient::Tick <- ClientTick <- UGameEngine::Tick <- UpdateWorld <- MainLoop
Any idea where the problems are and how to fix? I tried setting FrameRateLimit to 100 and CPU affinity, no help. I've tried Dohnal's D3D9 1.3 and OpenGL 3.6 drivers, but same problems persist with both.
(What do you need to know about the system? Core 2 Duo, Geforce 8600, basic Realtek HD Audio, WinXP SP3. Newer games and Unreal run fine, no problems, so I reckon it must be something about UT.)

Try making a new, fresh install with minimal changes to the settings and try it again, see if it happens there. Could be a bad setting or some kind of corruption.

Re: Noise problems.
In your UT.ini file, look for this setting:
It will be in the [Audio.GenericAudioSubsystem]
and [Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem] sections.
(Maybe another section if you got a weird soundcard or drivers setup....)
You probably only need to adjust it in one of them, but I
adjusted both.
Change it to Latency=60 or Latency=80.
Fixed the noise issues for me a while back.

Thanks all for replies. Fortunately didn't have to reinstall yet. I regenerated the .ini, then set Latency to 60. Now no crashes, (OpenGL) stays smooth as butter, audio is noiseless.

For reference, the Latency value is the buffer ahead in ms for galaxy's mixing. I got the source from Carlo at creative labs a year or two ago so I know sort of how it works now.
