Because Unreal is one of the most solidly built FPS, having a decent graphic engine (UT is more than 10 years old but still looks good) as well as huge amounts of mods and map packs.

It was my first first-person-shooter. On a 15'' iMac G3...
With Unreal, I learned how to install custom content of any kind, and how to edit .ini files to get the most out of a game, in short, digging into the entrails of a game (or program) in order to bend it to my will. Never got around to mapping, though, since UnrealED wasn't ported to Mac.
Then came UT, and oldskool. And countless custom maps. I'm still not through with them, having just started "Tower of Shrakith'a" for the first time(!)
After a hiatus of about three years, I'm currently playing it freshly installed on Mac via WINE. Took some banging and twisting to make it run, but now it's smooooth! (UnrealED works, too!)
Young people nowadays seem mesmerized when I tell them about fooling around with .ini files.

My dad god Unreal when I was a kid. I didn't find out about it until later on when I discovered it in the games cupboard along with UT. I enjoyed the games and found the editor, which took me a lot of self teaching and one simple tutorial to figure out how to work.
