Let's celebrate the music of Unreal

I know music is a matter of taste but I believe Unreal's music is very underappreciated in the gaming world. I guess because Unreal was a PC exclusive. I listen to game OSTs a lot, including console games, and I don't know any other game music that comes even close to Unreal's. There's many games with a few or several great tracks (Jesper Kyd and Nobuo Uematsu come to mind first) but Unreal has like at least 20 atmospheric and catchy tracks that I still can't get enough of after almost 20 years!

Alexander Brandon's style is so unique and awesome. It's one of those things where you know who made it just by hearing it (but it's probably because of those synth instruments he use, whatever they are).

Personally, my favorite is the ending theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--5COmk8ZM0

Also, Deus Ex has soundtrack that might feel familiar to the ears of Unreal players, but that might have something to do with having the same composers.

Deus Ex is my fav and I especially love the PS2 version cos of the controls. The OST has 3 or 4 tracks that I really like.
Here is a random treat

I have all music of Unreal for many years, including the beta tracks.

I remember downloading the soundtracks from that link in the past and listening to them in Winamp, but noticed that some of the tracks were borked. Extreme examples are the second half of Night Vision and Foundry, which are played back at the wrong tempo. There are also many other differences, plus the quality of those tracks is not all that great (I'm not referring to the kbps, but rather how they were recorded/converted). One of these days, I need to manually convert all the Unreal tracks to MP3 using modplug - complete with some reverb and tweaks so the tracks sound better.

I play straight through OpenMPT. I even set it up to run in Wine on my Mac. It's not just a player, being a full-on tracker composing tool, but it works. Usually full composers get the strongest amount of focus on accuracy by the developers, and OpenMPT has been my favorite. It also plays .umx files directly, so that's a plus.

XMPlay offers better playback IMHO, but OpenMPT is great for composing, no doubt about it.

Using OpenModplugTracker to play files is like using Photoshop as an image viewer.
Cracking a nut with a sledge-hammer.

Winamp does not come with the ability to open UMX containers.
You must add a suitable plugin.
There were specific UMX plugins, but they did not fix the problems with certain tracker playback.

You must use a newer tracker plugin, that also includes UMX filetype
The power of XMP is available to Winamp
In_XMP (eXtended Module Player) v4.3.12.7z
ftp://ftp.modland.com/pub/software/play ... 20plugins/

and for those that prefer ModPlug, they can use the updated version
[libmodplug 0.8.8.2]

The Unreal music means so much to me that I won't listen to it outside the game....kind of sacred. It really is magic; it captures an ethereal mood that IMO hasn't been matched since. There has been a lot of great music from a lot of games, but Unreal will always be something special.

I did all this some years ago. I split the UMXs into separate song sections and exported them individually, adding track data in Goldwave. They are saved as good quality MP3s and play in order of their occurrences in Unreal and then RtNP:UE. Perhaps you would be interested in having a copy?

Sure! Maybe Mediafire is a good host?
