Subject: [usp] [u1] [ut] Tutorial: Level Design for Dummies Part 1

Post Posted: 30 Nov 2008, 23:36

Mister Prophet has gone back to basics with his latest tutorial, Level Design for Dummies Part One. The tutorial is the first of a series of three tutorials which will teach the basics of UnrealEd, along with a number of general principles which should be of value to all mappers (not only newbies should read this tutorial). The tutorial is written primarily for UnrealEd 2, but a lot of the advice given is transferable to UnrealEd 1. You can find Prophet's tutorial here.

Very well written tutorial, though I'm not really sure if there's an audience for it (The second hands-on part that is) here on USP.org It seems to me most people on here already know how to map and those who don't don't have interest in learning it, but I could be wrong :o

It's a nice tutorial

I disagree. I've turned some unreal 1 coop players to this site and lots of them love the game but don't know how to map. This tutorial could be the turning point for them. I think some developers who already know the basics , but don't execute them properly would also find this tutorial handy    +25

Well I did make this one as a request by forumers. The Part 1 theory segment is appliable to all mappers, not just newbies. As for everyone who's been afraid to give level design a shot, the walkthrough is for them.

Part 2 and 3 will come out in due time.

"longer doesn't automatically mean better". You couldn't resist could you?

I haven't finished reading it yet though

ok finished now. Good stuff. Much better then the "first map" tutorials you find everywhere else. No single box maps for you newbies!

That's indeed one of the more advanced newbie tutorials. They even learn how to add partially different textures and light fixtures to walls. Good work! :)

Thanks guys

Since the next two parts are strictly walkthroughs, I'll try to cram a lot of stuff in there. My intention was to finish it up by making them create a workable Deathmatch level, but I might decide to craft a very short SP map. What do you guys think?

sounds great to me. This is after all a single player based site you're hosting these tuts on.
Also it would be nice to see the bare bones of a working single player level.
Just as most tutorials for n00bs show the bare bones of maps in general, this one can do that and also show the bare requirements of single player maps.

Good idea. Most tuts are about making a simple DM map... so a tut about a SP approach would be a great addition.
