Subject: Question about textures and file size
Post Posted: 20 Aug 2013, 23:23
I was looking at a map I've been working on, and I realized that it uses a lot of large texture files, but I barely even use most of the textures from any of them. A lot of these texture files most people probably wouldn't have unless they have the Wheel of Time maps. In terms of file size and convenience, would it be better for me just to mylevel the textures instead? It would make the map's file size bigger, but then there wouldn't be so many texture files to delete if someone wanted to uninstall the map, and it might make the .zip smaller, too. What I really want to know is, would it be worth it to make the map's file size bigger in exchange for there being fewer large texture files for people to have to download?

In this day and age, with multiterabyte hard drives and ever increasing download speeds; is the difference between a 0.5mb unreal map and a 10mb unreal map really that big? I wouldn't Mylevel anything

MyLevel is a diabolical beast for which there are no words in the English language to adequately convey how awful it is

I've had my fair share of problems with it. I guess I'll just stick with using the .utx files if that would be safer.

I don't think that Mylevel is a "diabolical beast" any more...
I've not had any problems with it in 227 ed (yet )
But I know what you mean in Ued 2.0

Heavy use of mylevel increases save corruption issues, at least in UT. If it's for a single map or perhaps two, then it's kinda fine.

Since you say you are using just a few of the textures in these utx files, another option might
be to just export the textures you are actually using, and make a new smaller utx file
for your map to use.

I'd just include the WoT texture set, as it's a nice set and others may like to have it anyway....and what was said about mylevel.
