From some of the threads and posts here, I seem to read that you can actually use the UT editor to create Unreal SP maps which can then be played in Unreal. Is that so? Just to know, thanks!

It's only possible if you are prepared to export the map from UT's editor and re-import it into the Unreal editor. You will lose all non-brush actors in the process and will have to replace them manually. I've never done this myself, though; hopefully other posters will be able to provide you with more info.
Life is what you make of it.

You can only make the geometry in the UT editor. You'll have to export/import it to your Unreal 1 editor and place all actors there.
Make sure to load every texture package you used in your map before importing - that way your texture work will be preserved.
