General guidelines and tips

  • It's easiest to keep compatibility if you work with the "classic Unreal" theme in mind.
  • Use exclusively stock Unreal packages. A list of the most important mapping packages can be found below.
  • Do not use any features limited to a certain platform. No 227 emitters, no UT weaponry, just the good ol' basics.
  • If in doubt whether a feature is considered "stock Unreal", don't hesitate to ask in the discussion thread or elsewhere.
  • It probably helps to double-check compatibility by testing your map across different Unreal installs, if they're available to you.
  • UT mappers: Do not use the Oldskool mod in your map! Use unreali.eightball instead of olweapons.oleightball, et cetera. Referencing Oldskool in the map will break Unreal compatibility!
  • Run your maps through .:..:'s converter tool! Mandatory for Unreal mappers above 224v and for Unreal Tournament mappers.
    UT maps will not run under Unreal pre-227 if they aren't converted using the tool!

  • makes UT maps run under Unreal 1 by removing 'transient' from XLevel
  • fixes Unreal pre-226 compatibility by deleting LevelSummary

This tool has to be run on an installation of Unreal Tournament! If you used another platform for mapping, copy your map to your UT Maps folder and run the converter from there.

Use this tool to make your UT map compatible with all versions of Unreal and Unreal Tournament.
Using this tool does NOT mean your UT map will auto-magically run in Unreal no matter what. Make sure you don't use any UT packages (Botpack etc.)!
