Not sure what you mean by this, as Half-Life is well known and accepted as second only to Doom in how revolutionary it was to the FPS genre. Unreal was innovative for the reasons Hellscrag mentioned.

By who?

HL had good multiplayer. I don't know why people thought it was good, but they did. For me, personally, Half Life (as I played it, finished it) was merely good. Anyway, fuck the system, there's only one king, and it is not Duke. It's Unreal.

And, seriously, I can't even remember half of half-life's levels... no, I can remember only two actually, the first one and one when you chased that four-legged huge ugly ass ball. Whatever that was. And I know I got incredibly frustrated not being able to kill the bastard.

Anyway, HL tried to be epic. Unreal just was.

HL almost literally changed the genre overnight as every aspect and set-piece in it was copied. Disliking it is fine, but denying it's influence on the genre is willful ignorance.

Considering the part of that sentence you selectively bolded do you think I'm talking about perceived quality or something? I'm only talking about how innovative (read copied) it was.

HL was good. Didn't care for the last part, but overall it was good.
Can't really compare it to Unreal.. it has it's own flavor.
