Heh...

I've just looked at the Fan Fiction section on the main page and it's a real mess. Almost all of the off-site links are dead or lead to completely dead sites. Of the rest, apart from the Noailiat fics, most of the links lead to threads on the old forum where the authors have forgotten about their stories after the first few chapters. That leaves the links to Waff and EBM's fics, which give truly "WTF" results.

To this day, "Noailiat" and Sijik seem to be the only authors who have successfully completed an Unreal fic (well, no, there were a number of complete stories knocking around during the UnrealCenter fan fiction competition years ago, but they're all lost to the Web now apart from Kran's Fall: Kira's Struggle).

Meanwhile, Enigma's review of Mishra's Descent has been in the works for about six years. :P

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what to do with this section of the site...?

EDIT: Perhaps we should have our own fan fiction competition - would there by any interest in doing that?

 I can't believe that shit I wrote was ever even linked on the site! I'm glad I ended up recycling that domain for use as a project back in high school... five years ago :p

Well, I'm just glad that the fanfic page carries this disclaimer:

Some of these links are off-site, so we cannot guarantee their soundness.

I can't believe "Battle for Nalipal" was released four years ago... I haven't written any substantial fictional work since, which is just depressing!

look on the bright side, you won't seem like such a nerdy fanboy!

Not saying that you DO seem like that. Just that you should twist things around a bit in your favour.

If there's enough others I could be interested; I still intend to do something with my fanfic idea (although I have ideas other than that), but if that goes ahead I might resurrect the original idea.

Meh. Fanfic was just a vehicle for practicing my writing skills (as is the case for many fanfic authors in the biggest fandoms). I've been wanting to write a standalone story for years, but never seem to have the necessary inspiration and the necessary free time simultaneously!

I've been holding onto a 15 pager as Supplemental Material for RD.

Perhaps I could try a short story for the site.

Here's how I would see such a competition working:

There would be two or three judges, who would NOT be submitting stories to the competition themselves (I would nominate myself for that role, and perhaps Enigma if I could convince him to do it). Judges would rate each story, informed by Enigma's schema, to identify the winner.

There would be certain criteria for the submission of stories:

  • A word limit (probably somewhere around the 20,000 mark).
  • A time limit (a month perhaps).
  • Most of each story would have to be written specifically for the competition (no submitting of old stories, although working up an old story outline or continuing on from an old first chapter might be acceptable).
  • Stories would be required to relate to the story of Unreal in one or more of the following ways:
    1. Featuring locations from Unreal/RtNP
    2. Featuring characters from Unreal/RtNP
    3. Featuring races from Unreal/RtNP
Aside from that, authors would be welcome to create completely original characters / stories, and would be allowed to reference other elements of the Unreal universe if they wished.
  • No pornographic or otherwise inappropriate material.
  • A willingness for the story to be hosted here at UnrealSP.Org.

At the moment, though, I have idea for a cheap (or ideally free) prize. :B

Well, it'd be possible to write a Skaarj / Nali romance without pornographic content, if you really wanted to. :P

Okay, corrected a fairly serious typo in my earlier post...!

I'm not really sure whether we have enough writers to fill 3 judge spots AND more to enter the competition. For example I am not fit to fulfill either of the roles. :P

The judges wouldn't have to be writers. Besides, part of the fun of the competition would be getting people who don't usually write to give it a go, as well as maybe encouraging a few new people to join the forum.

...on the other hand, you could be right and it could be a waste of time. :P
