Hey all. Hopefully someone can help me out here. Just got a new laptop, and whenever I try to connect to any online games I get this error message:
Changing video drivers doesn't prevent the error.
What could be causing this, and how might I remedy it?

This error is something trying to extract a binary file into your system folder.
Just be happy it didn't work and you don't know it's a virus
p.s.: all anticheats do that too
p.s. 2:
they can extract an exe with a specific name and then launch it from the system folder with batchexport
Sleep tight.

it always worried me about those utdc /ace dlls etc...
you just never know....but then again , you never know with any executable really...
to bad this is not used as a "feature" to pass missing feature dlls for addons...

What the christ? This sounds like a hilariously bad security hole.

There's another one
If you run UT/U1 in the C:\ drive at all you can just straight up write a new autoexec.bat or boot.ini to fuck over the system
You're pretty much immune if you don't run it on C:\ because there's no way to make the file writer change drives to my knowledge
Of course, if you get exploited with the previous extract + execute you're screwed anyway.
I once thought about making a self replicating UT-only harmless "virus" that would only report to me they've been infected purely to see how quickly it would spread
But then I realized if the code got into the wrong hands.. uh... well.. shit!

Well what a bunch of helpful answers those were.

wait, what the actual fuck? lol, so you're saying that connection was trying to access some executable or perform a function on my end? I've connected to that server plenty of times before on my old laptop, everything ran just fine... also, this happens for ALL server connection attempts on my new laptop.
