Subject: Should I buy the original UT?

Hey everybody, I've been a long time lurker to U1 co-op, though my only real experience of it online was through the UT2k4 conversion of it, and let's just say it wasn't really enough to satisfy my cravings for all things Unreal.

Besides the (beta version of?) original campaign, for some time there was a partially completed port of Operation: Na Pali. Glitches and incompleteness aside, I was hooked on custom map packs. Unfortunately, the O:NP port was only found on an assault/trial server, which removed it about a year later. The port was never finished or released to my knowledge.

Long story short, UT2k4 seems to be all but abandoned except for a couple of servers, and whatever you can scrounge together to use to play offline. The entire U1 port project seems have to been completely scrapped and forgotten.

I never forgot about that O:NP map pack, though, and had often read reviews on this site for other map packs. I would like to try them. Thing is... I lost my UT CD years ago, and for the life of me I can't find it, so that means I'll need to buy it again off Steam.

Which brings me to my question... Is it even worth it? It seems to me that the community for it is still making new content, which is generally a sign of life. And of course I would get access to all of the map packs I couldn't play before without version differences, glitches, and missing chunks. Are there still servers online that host these maps? Do people even still play online?

Just go for it - you'll get hours (dozens and dozens of hours) of fun out of it (and yes, I'm talking about those community SP projects).
As for online play - I don't bother with that, but yes you'll find servers for UT - see here for example: https://www.ut99.org/
Others here may point you to some specific servers, but you can also ask over at http://www.oldunreal.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl

You won't regret it! :)

For ut99 and 2k4 multiplayer, try joining the speck vidya unreal group on steam. They host vanilla (with custom levels) matches fairly commonly. Along with some Jedi knight academy 2 and 3. :)

Even then there are a bunch of servers on ut99 filled with atleast a decent amount of people playing. Ut2004 is basically dead outside of organized stuff and speck vidya.

As for singleplayer maps to play, this website, oldunreal, and Unreal Archives are all good sites. Unreal archives is a website dedicated to hosting singleplayer unreal and UT campaigns. Its how I managed to play xidia since all the other links I found for the Outpost Phoenix save fix were dead.

I'd say its worth it. I've been since UT and Unreal since I was younger and I've stuck with it today. Seeing more new people come into this small community would be awesome.

That's a strange question.
The only person who can answer that is you.
But you don't have to buy anything in order to get a clear idea on whether it's worth it or not. If you liked UT years ago then you'll probably still like it now (unless you're into the more flashy recent games). On this site you can get a clear idea on what to expect from all the new maps and mappacks, some of which are outstanding (7 Bullets, Xidia, Xenome just to mention a few). Have a look at the MOTW section to see some videos.
Mind you, UnrealSP.org is focused mainly on single player maps but there a really interesting COOP projects also (see RLCOOP) which provide a "different" gameplay.

Basically for me Unreal and UT are a must have and I will play these as long as possible (time permitting) because there's lots of replay value thanks to different difficulty settings an dsome mutators.
Thus, my point is : damn right it's worth it!!

If you want to play online with randos, it's probably gonna be rough - like it is for any old game. It's great if you like playing offline against bots or playing cooperatively with a friend or two, though. And there is an absolute shit ton of content available that is fun to mess with offline.

And as I heard over at oldunreal, is someone making a port for Unreal of the FF mod.

OK I went and bought it. Now trying to install everything... Let's see how this goes..

EDIT: Well, aside from some issues where I was running too fast, and the sound getting all distorted (which I fixed), it seems to run perfectly fine. Oldskool works great and I was able to load a random map pack I downloaded for testing. Thanks for the encouragement and links, guys.

TUTORIAL: Unreal Tournament Audio & Visuals Tweaking Guide

Turn Unreal into UT and UT into Unreal
https://www.ut99.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5540

Unreal and UT99 have had more love and updates than 2K4, so we even have more modern video and audio renderers still being made.
I tried to categorise the patches, fixes and updates into "What they do for UT"
http://hooksutplace.freeforums.org/unre ... -f104.html

Once you have updated renderers and texture packs, you can enjoy games that look this good.
