Why would a powerful starship crash? What thing has that kind of power?
I grant you the ultimate power!

Na Pali's gravity pull is just that strong.

The gravity can't be that strong, you are clearly running and jumping on it just fine.
It seems like such a newbie mistake by spacefaring ship to not being able to calculate and maintain escape velocity. More likely it is their ability to achieve escape velocity that has hindered somehow. Perhaps engine failure and some decelerating forces acting on the ship.

"As the ship initiated orbit, the planet's strange gravity forces caused a complete failure of the ship's navigation and orbital control systems. With no means to escape or power an orbit breaking thrust, the ship's orbit decayed over a period of 3 hours and ultimately plumetted down to the surface like a meteor. In an attempt to prevent the entire destruction of the ship and crew, the captain ordered a full power thrust dive, where the ship accelerates in an attempt to maintain a horizontal pitch. The ship crashed forming an enormously deep trench for over 5 miles in length."

This was one of my favorite maps, I loved how vast it was and when I realized that Titan was optional it blew my mind a little bit. And getting on IVAN KRAN deck and the first bit of deck itself was so sci-fi and cool.

A simple map but it does it's job well as a transition and sort of mini-boss map. The intimidating music and "holy shit they're throwing Titans around like they're normal enemies!?" thing adds up to make it memorable, and I imagine a lot of players just ran when they saw the Titans after just killing one in the last level (I'm pretty sure I did the first time), which adds to the tension.

I think it missed a sticker on the back saying "Student Driver".
I still like(d) the map though... Nice transition. Although I was always bummed that the exosuit/robot/whatever didn't do anything. It was just standing there....

It's tarydium.
Besides that, The Trench offers a great "wow" moment the first time round and just for that it's great. I think the transition from ancient structures to a sci-fi setting was perfectly handled here. I remember half expecting the exosuits to come to life as well, yeah...
I also think the ground textures of the trench itself do a good job adding detail and depth to the otherwise low poly terrain.

I prefer to kill Titans standing on the top then jump down to the Trench.
